Sunshine, attractions and live music are all major factor of tourism, and Stockholm offers all. Every year the city of Stockholm hosts music festivals that are sure to spark anyone’s interest, one of them in particular is the one day festival held in June entitled, “Where the Action is.” Throughout their five year run (and counting) they’ve featured major Swedish rock bands and artists. The Hellacopters, the Hives, and the Bones have all made their mark as well as some mainstream bands such as Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age and well known artist Neil Young. This popular festival is also held in Gotheburg, Sweden as well, for one more day. Another popular festival held in Stockholm is their Jazz festival. This festival is known a major summer event as well as the oldest in Stockholm. The Jazz festival takes place in July stretching all across the city and can last up to five days around the clock during their Jazzathon. The Stockholm Jazzathon is an attempt to set a new record as the world’s longest jam featuring 100 musicians. The concert is offered live on stockholmjazzathon.com as a part of the Stockholm Jazz Festival. Pride festival takes place during the last week of July and finishes big. In 2007 the parade that caps off the festival before August was 50,000 full from all over the world; with 500,000 people who attended to watch.
This is the biggest annual festival in the area as well as all of Europe. Another event that has made its staple in Stockholm every year is the “Stockholm Marathon,” which also serves as the Swedish marathon championship. Since 1979 this famous marathon has grown rapidly taking place in the beginning of June when the weather is near to perfect. In 2006 more than 17,000 participants were registered and it is still growing. The marathon’s track starts at the classic 1912 Olympic Stadium and consists of two loops around the city. Finishing the race consists of a three-quarter lap around the tracks right back at the Olympic Stadium. Lastly, the Swedish Nobel Prize Banquet takes place annually on December 10th. Just the Nobel Prizes and the Prize in Economics are presented in Stockholm, Sweden on the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death (December 10th). Whether it is live music, running marathons, celebrating yourself or witnessing a moment in history you’re after; Stockholm is the place to be.
