Stockholm Overview

Stockholm is the largest city of Sweden and is home to national Swedish Government, the Swedish Monarch and the Prime Minister. Stockholm is said to have originated in the 13th century. The city also carries much history and is apparent due to the fact it has managed to hold on to some of its original architecture. The Old Town in Gamla Stan was built on the central island next to Helgeandsholmen during this time and still holds strong today. Stockholm’s population began to grow immensely in 1523 after the establishment of royal power took place. Their population reached 10,000 people by the 1600s and continued to grow. Today the City of Stockholm can claim approximately an urban area population of 1.2 million people and a metropolitan area population of 1.7 million. Climate is one of the biggest reasons to reside in a certain place for long periods of time. Stockholm has mild temperatures year around. Their record high has been up to 97 degrees F and a record low of -25.5 degree’s F. Typically their summer’s stay between 55 and 77 degrees F and their winters usually stay between 23 and 34 degrees F. The temperatures alone have me sold. Visit Stockholm in the summertime and not only can you enjoy beautiful weather but longer days. Summers in Stockholm can reach up to 18 hours as oppose to winter days that are only 6. Considering Over 30% of the city area is made up of waterways and another 30% is made up of parks and green spaces there are plenty of opportunities for recreational fun with the family, or just a relaxing evening by the sunlight and water.

There are also educational opportunities in the city that make Stockholm a great experience for the family as well. Stockholm is home to about 100 museums making it the most crowded museum-cities in the world. Perhaps the most renowned museum is the National Museum. This museum carries 16,000 paintings and 30,000 objects of art handicraft dating back to the 16th century. Artists such as Antoine Watteau, Alexander Roslin, Anders Zorn, Johan Tobias Sergel and Cernst Josephon all have works displayed in this museum, as well as Rembrandt. Stockholm, Sweden is also the home of ice hockey and football and an incredible 30 attraction amusement park called Grona Lund. Looking for something for the evening? The Royal Dramatic Theatre and the Royal Swedish Opera are a few of Europe's most renowned theatres and were inaugurated in 1773.
